Why Ignoring Mental Health Care Should Worry You

Mental health problems in Kenya are increasingly becoming a major concern due to their negative impact on individuals, families and society as a whole. The stigma surrounding mental health makes people reluctant to seek help and often prevents early intervention of conditions. This, in turn, leads to a range of problems such as depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorders, substance abuse and addiction, among others. Kenya also faces a severe shortage of mental health professionals and infrastructural facilities to provide adequate mental healthcare. This has resulted in a significant burden on families, who often end up shouldering the responsibility of caring for their loved ones suffering from mental illnesses.

The negative impact of mental health problems on the working population can lead to decreased productivity and absenteeism. The financial burden of untreated mental health problems can be devastating on individuals, their families, and the economy.

It is, therefore, essential for Kenyan authorities to take serious steps to address mental health issues. Improving access to mental health care, reducing stigma, increasing funding, investing in research and training of mental health professionals will go a long way in mitigating the negative effects of mental health problems in Kenya.
