Alcohol Abuse and its Side Effects

Alcohol abuse is a serious and pressing issue in Kenya that cannot be ignored. Kenyan authorities are struggling with this problem that is estimated to contribute to about 13% of deaths and 10% of hospital admissions. The major cause of this problem is the widespread availability and affordability of alcohol. This coupled with a lack of education on responsible use has led to high levels of alcohol-related harms. Some of these harmful effects include physical health issues such as liver damage and cancer, and social problems such as violence and family breakdowns. Unfortunately, vulnerable groups such as young people, women, and those living in poverty are disproportionately affected.

Despite several interventions to combat alcohol abuse, including taxation, regulations on alcohol marketing and sales, and education campaigns, much more still needs to be done to effectively address this pressing public health issue. There is an urgent need to prioritize prevention and early intervention strategies in order to reduce the devastating consequences of alcohol abuse on individuals, families, and the wider community. Without timely and effective action, the negative effects of alcohol abuse will continue to spiral out of control.
